چکیده
Abstract Social networks amplify inequalities by fundamental mechanisms of social tie formation such as homophily and triadic closure. These forces sharpen segregation, which is reflected in fragmented network structure. Geographical impediments distance physical or administrative boundaries also reinforce segregation. Yet, less known about the joint relationships between structure, urban geography, inequality. In this paper we analyze an online find that fragmentation significantly higher towns residential neighborhoods are divided barriers rivers railroads. Towns relatively distant from center town amenities spatially concentrated more socially segregated. Using a two-stage model, show these geography features have significant with income inequality via fragmentation. other words, geographic place can compound economic networks.

Using time series data on ...

We explore the dynamics of group inequality when segregation of social networks places the initially less affluent group at a disadvantage in acquiring human capital. Extending Loury (1977), we demonstrate that (i) group differences in economic success can persist across generations in the absence of either discrimination or group differences in ability, provided that social segregation is suff...

The aim of this paper is to understand the interactions between productive effort and the creation of synergies that are the sources of technological collaboration agreements, agglomeration, and social interactions. We model this interaction in a way that allows us to characterize how agents devote resources to both activities. This permits a full-fledged equilibrium/welfare analysis of network...
